The Ultimate Sacrifice? Why Governor Fubara Just Shocked Rivers State by Walking Away

-By Ruben Mario Brodrick

In a political bombshell that has completely rewritten the script for Rivers State, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has officially withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries.

The stunning announcement came on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, catching both allies and rivals off guard. In a carefully worded statement, Fubara revealed that the decision followed "deep reflection and extensive consultations," describing the move as painful but vital to protect the peace and unity of the volatile state.

"Rivers State is bigger than any individual," Fubara stated, emphasizing that leadership often requires putting personal ambitions aside for the greater good.

The Mystery Behind the Exit

While the governor pledged his full loyalty to the APC and whoever wins the ticket, he dropped a cryptic hint about the intense backroom political pressure that forced his hand. Invoking a traditional proverb, Fubara noted:

“As our elders say, not everything a hunter sees in the forest is spoken of in the marketplace.”

He added that keeping certain realities quiet was a choice born of wisdom and restraint, not fear.

Addressing his disappointed base, Fubara explained his recent strategic silence and thanked his supporters for their unwavering loyalty. He also extended gratitude to the APC leadership and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for their backing.

Not a Surrender

Political analysts are already scrambling to predict what this means for the APC, with many predicting a major shift toward a consensus candidate. However, Fubara closed the door on any narrative of defeat:

"Let it be clearly understood that I stepped aside not out of weakness, fear, or surrender, but out of conviction and sacrifice so that Rivers State may move forward in peace and unity."

The governor assured citizens that he remains fully committed to delivering on his mandate until the final day of his tenure.
